How we work.

What we build, what we refuse to build, and how you can check us. These are the principles we engineer into the product, not the ones we write into a policy.

We are not a data company.

Somnus builds software that runs on your phone. We are not in the business of collecting, brokering or selling people’s nights.

How it works

  • Nightsong listens and scores on the phone. The audio never uploads to us.
  • When you choose to share, what reaches us is a short set of numbers about the night. No sound. No name. No email.

Privacy is engineered, not promised.

A policy tells you what a company intends. The architecture tells you what it can do. We build the limits into the software, so the promise does not depend on anyone’s good behavior, including ours.

How it works

  • Private by default. Nothing is shared until you share it.
  • Least data needed. If the score does not need it, the app does not ask for it.
  • Sharing is an action you take, never a setting we flip.

Every use has a purpose.

The night is used to score the night. That is the purpose, and the only one.

How it works

  • No ads. We do not sell your nights.
  • Your audio never reaches us, so nothing is trained on it.
  • If we ever add a use, we will say so first, in plain language, before it ships.

De-identified, not “anonymous.”

Anonymous is a word that overpromises. We say de-identified, and we show you the layers.

How it works

  • What leaves the phone carries no name and no email.
  • It is numbers, not sound, and it travels to our own locked storage.
  • Each layer narrows what anyone could learn. No single layer is the whole answer, so we use all of them.

Built for deletion.

Data you do not keep cannot be misused. Deletion is designed in from the first line of code, not bolted on later.

How it works

  • Snore clips clear from the phone after 7 nights.
  • Delete the app, and the recordings on the phone go with it.
  • Ask us, and we delete what you sent.

A number you can trust.

A score is only useful if it means the same thing every time. Trust in the number comes from being able to see where it came from.

How it works

  • Same night, same number. The score locks when the night ends.
  • No clear night, no number. If the phone could not hear the night well, you get no score instead of a guess.
  • Reasons shown. Every score comes with what shaped it.

AI is a tool, not magic.

Modern AI is powerful and it is fragile. We treat it as one part of a system, fenced by rules we can read and test.

How it works

  • A learned model listens. Fixed rules check it. The rules can take a call away. They never add one.
  • We define what good looks like before we build, not after.
  • The engine was tested against 60 held-out sleep-lab recordings, then locked.
  • Every release is replayed against the same set. If a number moves that should not, the release does not ship.

Software informs. People decide.

There is no “the algorithm decided” at Somnus. A named person owns every output we ship.

How it works

  • Nightsong is a wellness app. It does not diagnose, screen for, or treat any condition.
  • Care decisions belong with you and your clinician.

A small team, on purpose.

We own every line of code and every decision, and we answer for both.

How it works

  • Fewer hands. Clear ownership. Faster fixes.
  • The people who build it are the people you can reach.
  • Across the beta so far: 1,100+ nights, 8,100+ hours, scored on the phone.

Questions we ask before we ship.

  1. Would we put it in our own bedroom?
  2. Does it need the data it asks for?
  3. Does it hold up on a hard night, or only an easy one?
  4. Can a person see why the number moved?
  5. Can it be deleted?
  6. When it fails, does it fail honestly?
