Somnus Explained · Issue Nº 01
Somnus Is Not
a Data
Company.
Is Somnus a data company? No. We build software that runs on your phone.
Editor's Note: This is installment Nº 01 of Somnus Explained, a series on who we are, what we build, and the principles that guide the work. The principles themselves are set out in How We Work. This series expands on them.
People see a sleep app and draw a fair conclusion. A company that listens to your nights must be in the business of your nights. Many companies that gather sleep data do make money from it, so the assumption is reasonable.
Is Somnus a data company? No.
Somnus builds software that runs on your phone. Nightsong listens on the nightstand, and BSA, our acoustic engine, processes the night on the phone. We are not in the business of collecting, brokering or selling people’s nights. What can reach us is a short set of numbers you choose to send.
Why it matters
The label sets the expectation. A data company is judged by what it gathers. We want to be judged by whether the number on your phone is honest, night after night.
Sleep audio is the sound of your bedroom. It is your breathing, your snoring, the hours when you are least guarded. The difference between a company that serves you and a company that sells you should never take a lawyer to find.
Why it is hard
Streaming the night to a server is the easy design. Keeping the analysis on the phone means BSA has to do its work on the nightstand, under your roof. We chose that trade on purpose. It is the architecture you pick when you expect scrutiny.
The misconception has a second form. People see our work on an implant and an oral device and decide Somnus must be a device company. Devices are the part you can hold, so they tend to win the argument about identity. Both labels get the order wrong. Software on the phone comes first.
How we think about it
We process your night on your phone. We are not a broker of it. Our business is helping people understand their nights, not selling the people who come to us.
How we think about the devices
The longer arc is one connected loop. Sense, score, route, therapy, outcomes, re-score. Bedside Node™ is one bedside wellness device in development. It is not for sale. HYPNARA™ and MORPHEX™AI are in development. They are not FDA cleared and not for sale. The devices are points in the loop. The company is the loop, not the device list and not a pile of data.
How it works
Today the loop starts on the phone.
- Nightsong listens on the nightstand. BSA scores the night on the phone. The audio never uploads to us.
- The Somnus Index reads you against you. If the night was not clearly heard, there is no number.
- What can leave the phone is a short set of numbers about the night, and only when you choose to send them. No sound. No name. No email.
- Installing the app is not sharing. Nothing is shared until you share it.
Straight answers
- Do you sell data? No. The night is used to score the night. No ads. We do not sell your nights.
- Do you diagnose anything? No. Nightsong is a wellness app. It does not diagnose, screen for, or treat any condition.
- Do you need hardware? No. The phone you own. Nightsong runs on the iPhone on your nightstand.
- Can I buy one of your devices? No. HYPNARA and MORPHEX AI are in development. They are not FDA cleared and not for sale.
- Will there be hardware? Yes, in time. Each device is a later stage of the loop, not the starting point.
Questions we ask
- Does the score need this data, or would we only be collecting it?
- Does it work on the phone a person already owns?
- Does it make the number more honest, or only more impressive?
In short
Somnus is not a data company. We build software that runs on your phone, and the night is processed there. We do not collect, broker or sell people’s nights. What can reach us is numbers you choose to send.
What comes next
If we are not in the business of your nights, the next question is what the night is for. In installment Nº 02, we explain why every use has a purpose, and why the night is used to score the night.
